HOW TO DECORATE WITH COLOR - for the Timid & the Bold

Color is one of the most significant design elements that can be incorporated in interior spaces. Whether introduced with subtlety or in abundance, when color is applied appropriately it can be one of the most compelling components of a room. Here are a few essential steps to help guide you in designing with color.

Why Design With Color

First, it's necessary to understand the importance of color in residential spaces. Color is powerful, both aesthetically and psychologically. A splash or a pop of color in a space can immediately elevate a room and add dimensionality to the design scheme. When effectively incorporated, color can also trigger a range of emotions, which are psychologically tied to each individual and deeply personal. Thus, color can inspire feelings of joy, creativity, serenity, love, optimism …

How to Choose The Right Color

It's essential to determine next what color you would like to introduce into your space. I always recommend choosing one "accent color" for those who are either new to, or intimidated by color. If you're still hesitant, you may even decide on metallic tones such as brass, gold or silver. Although these colors technically have neutral tones, they can still function as an "accent color". For those who naturally welcome color, you can be bolder and create a palette of several hues. You may select your favorite color or color scheme, or you may approach it based on what feelings you would like to encourage. For example, if you would like your space to inspire you or make you feel calmer, try to identify what colors you personally associate with those particular sentiments.

Applying Color - How Much & How To

Once you've selected your preferred color(s), you’ll now need to decide how much color you would like to mix into your space. Are you comfortable with a subtle pinch, a dash, or a much more generous dose of color? According to how much color you prefer to work with, you may then choose a few key pieces or areas to accent.

For example, if you prefer a small pinch of color, a few well placed accessories will do the trick. You can select a colorful vase, a few pillows and a throw, or a frame. If you would like a little more color, you can think bigger and choose colorful window treatments, artwork, seat cushions or a light fixture. However, if you prefer that color make a much bolder statement, you may choose to resurface your bathroom vanity, purchase a vibrant hued sofa, or paint an accent wall/ceiling. Be creative and allow your personality to shine!

Maintaining Balance

In relation to your accent color or palette, the remainder of your space may then be kept as a neutral "canvas”. This is especially a good idea if you are hesitant, or prefer to be noncommittal towards your color choices. A neutral base will also allow you to easily transition to another color when you’re ready to move on. Think of these colorful new accents or accessories as “statement pieces” in your home, incorporating them harmoniously in the overall space while still allowing them to shine.

Remember to have fun with color, take risks and keep it fresh, shifting things around with the seasons or your mood!
